In a new twist, Chelsea have sent Fernando Torres to Milan on a permanent transfer, so he can join Atletico Madrid.
A deal has been struck between Milan and Atleti to exchange Torres for Alessio Cerci on 18-month loans.
However, this evening Chelsea released a statement announcing that Torres “will complete a permanent transfer to the Serie A side” on January 5.
“Chelsea Football Club thanks Fernando for his service during the past four seasons and wishes him the very best for the future.”
It is not clear whether any money exchanged hands to make this move permanent, but Milan also confirmed the news and January 5 date with their own statement.
This means Milan will be able to loan Torres to Atletico Madrid rather than allow the Spaniards to simply lease out the remaining 18 months of his two-year loan from Chelsea.
It is reported that Milan and Atleti will each pay half of Torres’ €4m per season salary.
Torres arrived on loan at San Siro over the summer, but scored only one Serie A goal.
