Cagliari have officially appointed new coach Davide Nicola after he finally managed to terminate his contract with Empoli.
The tactician had accepted the proposal from the Sardinians some weeks ago, but first had to reach an agreement with his current club to end their rapport on good terms.
That breakthrough arrived this evening with a formal statement from Empoli that the contract with Nicola and his staff had been terminated by mutual consent.
He only took over at the Stadio Castellani on January 15 with the club deep in the relegation zone, but took them to a surprise Serie A rescue mission after six wins, five draws and seven defeats.
Now Nicola will take over at Cagliari, as Claudio Ranieri announced his retirement after first bringing them to promotion via the play-offs, then guaranteeing their Serie A status.
A statement confirms he signed a contract to June 2026, with option for a further season.
As for Empoli, they already appointed former Lecce coach Roberto D’Aversa.
