The tragedy in the Abruzzo region was sparked by earthquakes, which caused an avalanche that flattened the five-star Rigopiano spa hotel, killing at least five people.
So far 11 have been pulled from the scene with another 23 still missing. Pescara have been given permission to hold a minute’s silence before the game.
“We have been truly stunned by what has been happening in our region,” said the Coach in his Press conference.
“Just over two months ago we were in that hotel. We are close to the families. To be honest, I don’t even know if it makes sense to play, as there are so many negative events happening, but at the same time you can’t just stop everything.”
The tremors are continuing and heavy snowfall has made the situation even worse for those without power or water.
The Stadio Adriatico was inspected and given the all-clear for earthquake damage.
As for Pescara, they are still technically without a win this season, having been awarded the 3-0 victory over Sassuolo only thanks to an ineligible player.
“I have to evaluate Ledjan Memushaj and Alberto Cerri, as they had flu, while Alberto Gilardino is out. Jean-Christophe Bahebeck has recovered, but can’t start a match yet, and Sulley Muntari needs at least a week to be at his best.
“We miss the feeling of victory to a tremendous degree. Bringing home three points could change everything and take some of this pressure off our shoulders.
“I am a positive person and try to transmit that to the team. This is not our last chance saloon. We are convinced that we can blow the season wide open again.”
Pescara squad for Sassuolo: Fiorillo, Bizzarri, Aldegani; Biraghi, Crescenzi, Stendardo, Coda, Fornasier, Delli Carri; Cubas, Benali, Bruno, Cristante, Memushaj, Verre; Cerri, Caprari, Mitrita, Pepe, Bahebeck, Kastanos
