The Italian Football Federation had invited the South Americans to face them at the request of boss Cesare Prandelli.

The latter wanted the game to be played in Rome in honour of Pope Francis, the Argentine who was elected as head of the Catholic Church in March.

However, the August 14 date proposed by the Azzurri clashes with a friendly which Argentina have lined up in Moscow against Russia.
