Napoli are looking to extend Dries Mertens' contract until 2020, as they deny the player is looking to leave.

The Belgian winger appeared to be on his way out after an interview was published in which he asked pretty starkly for a new contract.

However the Partenopei have disclaimed the contents of the interview in an official response.

“SSC Napoli would like to specify that Dries Mertens' interview with the Belgian outlet Nieuwsblad, reported these days by the national media, dates from March of last year, when he played with the Belgium national team,” reads their statement.

Now La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Napoli are looking to extend his contract, perhaps in response to the popular uproar that followed the release of the player's statements.

Mertens has a contract due to expire in 2018, and will be offered to renew it for another two seasons.
