Torino icon Marco Ferrante claims Napoli signed Andrea Petagna to swap him for Andrea Belotti and that his old club’s problems stem from ‘too many foreigners’.
Napoli bought Petagna in January and returned him to SPAL for the rest of the season, but Ferrante believes he was taken as a bargaining chip for the eventual arrival of Belotti.
“For me, he’ll go to Napoli,” he told TMW Radio.
“They took Petagna to then turn him over to Torino. The deal is doable. Then there are the Euros, which he has to live up to, so he needs to play for a top club.”
The 49-year-old is one of Torino’s all-time top scorers with 125 goals, and he discussed their disappointing 2019-20 campaign.
“There’s a bit of confusion behind the scenes. The pieces have changed during the season and that rarely happens because it unbalances things.
“At the start of the season, it was wrong to say that the minimum objective was the Europa League.
“Indeed, they now risk falling into Serie B. It’s better to say one word less than one word more.
“There’s so much disharmony. They sacked Mazzarri and brought in Longo, who’s a talented but inexperienced young man.
“On top of that, they lack leaders beyond Belotti. They made the wrong moves in the transfer market.
“They need players who are worthy of playing for Toro, who know how to fight. There are too many foreigners who aren’t worthy. Now we need to turn the page and save ourselves.
“Belotti’s battling, he’s covering every blade of grass and that’s why he has lost his sharpness in front of goal.”
