Walter Mazzarri is expected to reveal his decision today, but Napoli’s candidates now include Roberto Di Matteo, Rafa Benitez and Jupp Heynckes.
The Coach called a surprise Press conference for this afternoon, as he had not been due to speak with the media before Sunday night’s game with Roma.
It is believed he will finally give his decision on whether to extend the contract with Napoli that expires next month or walk away for pastures new. This will be the first time he has spoken to the media since May 5.
Meanwhile, newspapers in Italy are busy speculating over who will replace Mazzarri if he does decide to go.
Current Chelsea Interim Manager Benitez remains a strong candidate after winning the Europa League trophy this week.
Another ex-Chelsea man, Di Matteo, is also thought to be in the running for the Partenopei bench.
According to Tuttosport, the latest option is Heynckes, the Bayern Munich Coach who has taken his men to the Champions League Final by crushing Juventus and Barcelona.
Pep Guardiola is already hired for next season, as Heynckes had said he was going to retire this summer, but there could be a change of plan.
“The whole world has contacted me and want to take me while I’m still under contract, but I’m just concentrating on the Champions League Final and not on any negotiations. It was an honour to work here. It’s still great fun,” the 68-year-old German Coach told Kicker magazine.
“When I was 10, 15 years younger, I might have thought of a very profound commitment abroad. But you must remember that I am no longer the youngest.”
