Napoli fans ramped up their protest against not just the players, but also urged President Aurelio De Laurentiis to ‘sell the club.’
This time a year ago, the Partenopei were celebrating their first Serie A title victory in over 30 years, but the situation is now very different.
Over the last few weeks, the ultras have been showing their disgust at the post-Scudetto season by leaving their seats empty for a period during the first half.
This evening at the Stadio Castellani, they left a banner which read: ‘Only the fans always win’ for the opening 15 minutes.
It meant they missed the Empoli goal, which arrived in the opening four minutes with an Alberto Cerri free header.
When the circa 4,000 fans did enter the stadium, they began to chant insults towards their own players, including ‘we’ll give you some balls’ and ‘go to work.’
De Laurentiis was in the stands too at the Stadio Castellani and he was not exempt from the protest, as at one stage the ultras chanted: ‘De Laurentiis hear our voice – sell Napoli.’
The situation wasn’t much better on social media, where it was noted Cerri had not scored in Serie A since April 2021.
“The Napoli defence is so bad that even Cerri managed to score a goal,” noted one fan.
“We are so bad that Bereszynski is made to look like Cafu. Shameful,” added another.
Juan Jesus and Natan got the worst of the comments, with some pointing out “Brazil has 215.3m inhabitants and Napoli managed to find the two worst players in the country.”
