Moratti: ‘Moggi wanted to leave Juventus for Inter before Calciopoli’

Former Inter president Massimo Moratti revealed an interesting snippet from the past and discussed the work of Simone Inzaghi’s squad this season.

The Nerazzurri currently sit 5th in the league table heading into the second half of the campaign, having started in poor fashion after their Scudetto heartbreak last season. Inter have lost five of their 15 outings in the league but did enough in the Champions League to book their spot in the Round of 16.

Speaking to SportPaper, Moratti first revealed something interesting dating back to his time in charge of Inter.

“Luciano Moggi wanted to leave Juventus to come to Inter before Calciopoli.”

He touched on the work of Inzaghi’s Inter this season.

“Simone Inzaghi’s team is already strong as it is and I don’t expect new signings in January, I don’t know who could suit the Nerazzurri now.”

The former Nerazzurri president spoke about the Milan Skriniar situation and the next steps for the club.

“I don’t know, it depends on the club, we’ll see what they can do. So far they have done well, keeping strong players and building a proper team.

“Inter have a chance to bounce back in the league, it will be a very good game with Napoli who are very strong.

“Then the Nerazzurri have a very good chance to pass the round in the Champions League against Porto, it will also depend on Lukaku’s form.”

Finally, Moratti discussed Jose Mourinho’s decision to decline the Portugal job in order to focus on his project at Roma.

“This was a personal choice, Jose was brave in going to Rome. He is a professional bound by his contract with the Giallorossi, this reflects the serious personality of the man.”

Inter’s first game of 2023 is against Napoli on January 4. They’ll also face Milan in the Supercoppa Italian final on January 18.
