Riccardo Montolivo “can’t wait to get back” after receiving good news on his injury and asked Milan fans for help.

The midfielder will miss Saturday’s Serie A match with Atalanta, but could potentially return next week following a thigh strain.

“I am feeling much better now and can’t wait to get back,” he told Milan Channel.

“Now we will evaluate the situation with the medical staff and decide the right moment to resume training with the full squad. I am happy, because the injury is not as bad as it seemed at first.

“It’s important for us to start strong after the break for international duty, especially on Tuesday in the Champions League. The fans are very important for us and we ask for their help in the next few games.

“Atalanta know how to play good football and will be set out well by their Coach. I can guarantee Atalanta won’t be afraid of facing Milan.”

Montolivo was asked what position he preferred on the pitch, having been used as a trequartista or deep-lying playmaker for Fiorentina and Italy.

“I am most suited to the role of inside left midfielder. Our midfield has quality and quantity, it’s just up to us now to show what we can do.

“When all our players are fit and available, our strike force will be on a par with any of the other Italian teams.”
