The Blucerchiati are 13th in Serie A, but the relegation battle is so tight that they are only five points above the drop zone, despite successive wins over fellow strugglers Frosinone and Verona.

“Since the League table doesn’t make for pleasant reading, every game is a watershed,” Montella told reporters in his Press conference ahead of the Empoli match. Click here for a match preview.

“We need to think about the match without making speeches. We need to pick up points because our position is not yet peaceful.

“I insist on attitude, our first objective is to go out there with the right attitude, then the quality will naturally follow from that.”

Empoli are on a run of nine Serie A games without a win, but Montella warns that the Tuscan side have quality.

“They’ve always put in good performances. The team is very organised, they have quality in midfield and an organised defence.

“It’ll be a difficult game, we’re facing a team which will approach this with all their physical and mental energy. We have to put those same characteristics on the pitch.

“Riccardo Saponara? Every game we have to think about how to counter the strengths of the opponent. Empoli have a proven structure, but also lots of quality.”
