The problems began at the weekend after the Viola’s 4-3 victory over Palermo, which again saw Gomez miss some great scoring opportunities.
Montella warned he “expects more” from the German striker and hinted at possibly winding up this rapport early.
“I did not like Montella’s words,” noted agent Ulrich Ferber on laroma24.it today. “Mario expects a lot more too, but the situation after his injury is very difficult. He has also been unlucky in recent games and is perhaps a little tense in front of goal.
“Could he be exchanged with Roma’s Mattia Destro? I don’t know. I can only say Mario is happy in Florence and wants to score for the fans. The situation is not easy and at the moment we don’t know how it will end.”
This evening Fiorentina also released a statement from Coach Montella on the controversy.
“I want to make it clear that my comments were extrapolated from a much larger debate, but the media made them out to be exclusively referencing Mario Gomez.
“I was answering multiple questions regarding the rapport between chances and goals scored, so undoubtedly at the moment we aren’t making the most of them.
“I have spoken about Mario Gomez’s form many times in the Press room and post-match interviews, always with the intention of ‘shaking up’ my player from this particular situation.
“I do not usually criticise my players, especially not in public, and I certainly wouldn’t do that to Mario, as we all know his indubitable qualities as a professional and as a man.”
