Vincenzo Montella “believes in a comeback” after Fiorentina lost the Europa League semi-final 3-0 at Sevilla.
The Viola wasted numerous golden opportunities and forced several saves from Sergio Rico, but were flattened by the reigning trophy holders.
“To be fair, I can say the team had a fantastic first half and deserved to score at least one goal,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.
“We created four clear-cut opportunities, while Sevilla scored at the first attempt. After the break and with the second goal, our heads dropped.
“Despite the result, the game says we played on a par with Sevilla and that means we can fight it out to the end next Thursday.
“I believe in the comeback and in my view it is possible. If they scored three goals tonight, why can’t we in the second leg?”
Montella opted for a 4-3-3 formation, but it left them very exposed down the flanks.
“We wanted to defend deep and that worked in the first half. Things get more complicated when encountering a strong and quick player like Aleix Vidal, especially as he times his runs perfectly.
“We wanted to close up the central channels and attack on the wings. Sevilla have an excellent squad that was put together with a real sense of logic. In terms of characteristics, they are similar to Napoli.
“It’s a shame, as my team really didn’t deserve to lose by this margin. We have to believe and we’ll need the support of our fans.”
