Montella: ‘Atalanta troubled Viola’

Vincenzo Montella complimented Atalanta for causing Fiorentina so many problems this evening.

“This was by no means a foregone conclusion and is a victory of the group, whose qualities go beyond tactics and quality,” he told Sky Sport Italia after a 2-0 win.

Vincenzo Montella complimented Atalanta for causing Fiorentina so many problems this evening.

“This was by no means a foregone conclusion and is a victory of the group, whose qualities go beyond tactics and quality,” he told Sky Sport Italia after a 2-0 win.

“Compliments to Atalanta, who made life extremely difficult for us tonight. We had more chances and didn’t make the most of them, while at times we were too stretched out, so the performance doesn’t entirely satisfy me.”

The Viola were coming off two consecutive defeats between Serie A and Coppa Italia. They face Udinese in the second leg of the Coppa semi-final on Tuesday.

“This game was worth as much as the semi-final, as these are three very important points for the table and also a confidence-booster going into Tuesday’s game.

“Gonzalo Rodriguez wasn’t in great shape, so I preferred not to risk him and rested some others who needed it.”

Josip Ilicic scored a rare goal, curling a free kick into the top corner.

“He hasn’t played that much this season due to injuries and he’s someone who needs to play consistently. He worked hard for the team today and has talent, so he’s worth waiting for.

“His attitude and posture doesn’t help him, but if he keeps putting in performances like this then we are happy to support him.”
