Montella admires Fiorentina fightback

Vincenzo Montella was reassured by the Fiorentina fightback to hold Parma 1-1. “We saw a different team after the break.”

Gaetano Castrovilli’s diving header cancelled out the Gervinho counter-attack at the Stadio Franchi.

“We struggled and I didn’t like the attitude in the first half, as we lacked determination both on the ball and off it. We conceded when losing possession in midfield,” Montella told Sky Sport Italia.

“I don’t know if we felt the pressure with so many young players on the field, or the change of system affected them or what caused it, but we saw a different team after the break.

“The team reacted very well and showed maturity. That means we are on our way to achieving that mentality. Perhaps the goal was the wake-up call we needed to get more players into the opposition box.

“We knew Parma would defend and counter, so we kept a lot of possession, but if we’d been more precise, we could’ve taken home all three points.”

Gervinho’s goal came from Federico Chiesa getting caught in possession in midfield.

“He had a bit of a cold today and grit his teeth to play on, so we can only expect so much. Let’s also not forget he is 22 years old and it can happen to anyone.”
