‘Milan were missing Higuain’

Inter striker Mauro Icardi believes Gonzalo Higuain is “what Milan were missing” ahead of the derby on Sunday.

Inter striker Mauro Icardi believes Gonzalo Higuain is “what Milan were missing” ahead of the derby on Sunday.

The first Derby della Madonnina has been billed as a showdown between the two Argentines, and the Nerazzurri captain previewed the game with Sky.

“It’s the game the city most looks forward to,” Icardi confirmed.

“Of course it’s only three points if you win, but the important thing is to play a great game and give consistency to what we’re doing. If we win, we’ll work better in the aftermath.

“Milan have great players, with experience and who have been playing in Serie A for a long time.

“If I had to choose one I’d say Higuain, because he scores so many goals. He’s what Milan were missing.

“I don’t see a rivalry, he’s had a great career and he’s a great striker. We’ll be against each other in the game, but I’m calm and looking to do my best.

“Can I score more goals than Higuain and Cristiano Ronaldo? I don’t like to talk about those things at the start of the season, I’ll try to give my contribution and then we’ll see in May.

Icardi was then asked if he prefers scoring against the Rossoneri or Juventus.

“Those are two special games, I’ve scored in both and felt many emotions. In the end though scoring only matters if you win, that’s the important thing.”

Immediately after the derby, Inter face Barcelona in the Champions League.

“These are difficult games but we can play them and put in great performances,” Icardi said.

“I can’t say if these games will tell us where we’ll be, but if we win we can go forward in the best way.

“We take things one game at a time, now there’s the derby and I’m calm and focused for that game. The others will come later.

“We’ve had a great start in the Champions League and those two wins give us a good boost for the game on Wednesday. We can hurt them [Barça] like Roma did last year or the smaller clubs in Spain have this season.”

Can the Beneamata close the gap to Juventus and Napoli at the top of Serie A?

“I can’t say, all I’ll say is that Inter have great players who are improving. A lot of new players have come in and they’ll improve.

“Juve have been winning for the last few years and already have a solid base, that’s the important part.

“I want to win something at Inter, and if we do well the prizes could arrive.”
