Milan hand Merkel back to Genoa

Milan will give Alexander Merkel back to Genoa next season, confirmed Rossoblu director of sport Stefano Capozucca.

“Merkel is certainly a young player who is worthy of a top club, but right now he needs to play consistently so he can further improve.

“Next season he will definitely be playing for Genoa, as he has already shown that he can put in some important performances with this jersey.”

The 20-year-old midfielder was co-owned by the two clubs, as Milan sold half his contract to Genoa as part of the Stephan El Shaarawy transfer, but Genoa have now agreed to buy him outright.

However, Merkel returned to Milan for six months in January when they were going through an injury crisis.

It did not help, as the German picked up an injury almost immediately and barely got to feature.
