‘Milan derby not what it was’

Serginho admits that the Derby della Madonnina has lost its charm, but he backs Milan to overcome Inter.

When Serie A resumes in Week 12 next weekend, Milan’s two teams will meet for a first derby of the season at San Siro.

For one of the Rossoneri’s former representatives, this fixture may still be important to both teams, but outside interest isn’t the same.

“Italian football is not going through a good period and I must say that this is felt even more so in Milan for the situation with the city’s two clubs,” Serginho has told Calciomercato.it today.

“This derby generates less interest than in previous years, with respect to the history of Milan and Inter, two teams who used to win both in Italy and in Europe and now find themselves unable to play in the Champions League and out of the title race.

“It is clear, therefore, that this game has lost a bit of its charm from the past, even if this game remains important for the rest of the season.

“As a Milanista I hope Milan can win and I believe that Inzaghi’s side has more at this time.

“The group are on his side. In a short period of time he has managed to restore confidence in the players’ ability and given awareness to those who had lost a little of the joy in the sport.

“Pippo is in love with the sport. I remember when we were teammates his attention in following the newspapers and all the changes at every team, from Serie A down to the smaller categories.

“Time should permit him to gain experience as a Coach, but I have no doubts that he will do well in his new role.”

Heading into the derby, Inter also have a new face on their bench in the form of returning Coach Roberto Mancini.

“When you change Coach at least for the first few games there is always a shock to the environment.

“Players who previously had not found much space in the team find new motivation, to try to immediately earn the confidence of their new Coach, and even those who had played have certain motivations.

“Nothing can be added about the quality of Mancini as a Coach, but his arrival might not be enough if he does not have a say in the transfer market decisions in January.”
