Dries Mertens commented on his uncertain future, confirming that he’s not held contract renewal talks with Napoli yet.
The 35-year-old Belgian forward’s current deal expires with the Partenopei at the end of this month, meaning he’s a little over a fortnight away from leaving the club on a free transfer, ending a nine-year association. Mertens scored 11 goals and provided two assists in 30 Serie A appearances this season.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Belgium’s Nations League clash against Poland, Mertens discussed his future and what his plans are.
“I want to make the right choice. I want to find a good club. I’m calm, but I think a lot about my choice. I thought I’d stay at Napoli, it’s strange that they waited so long.
“Regarding the contract extension at Napoli, I haven’t heard from anyone yet. I hope in the coming days or weeks to let you know.”
Mertens joined Napoli in the summer of 2013 from PSV in a deal worth around €10m. In his nine years with the club, he’s made 397 appearances across competitions, scoring 148 goals and providing 90 assists.
The Belgian forward has recently been linked with a move to Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio, with the Italian coach keen to be reunited with an old favourite of his.
