Kylian Mbappé realises everyone has a lot to prove in the Nations League clash tomorrow, including ex-PSG teammate Gianluigi Donnarumma. ‘Italy didn’t play well at EURO 2024, but neither did France.’
The opening game in this group kicks off at Parc des Princes on Friday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).
This is the home stadium for Azzurri goalkeeper Donnarumma, who has been at Paris Saint-Germain since 2021.
Most notably, it is also the first time Mbappé has returned here since leaving PSG as a free agent to join Real Madrid.
“It’s going very well in Madrid and we have already won a trophy,” said Mbappé in his press conference.
“I don’t feel any different being back here, after all I didn’t leave long ago. I have great memories tied to this stadium, where I spent many years of my career. I don’t expect any reaction in particular from the fans, what matters is that we win.”
Has he spoken to his former club teammate Donnarumma ahead of the showdown?
“No, but I will speak to him this evening. Italy did not play well at EURO 2024, but frankly neither did France. Italy remain one of the best teams and France-Italy is always one of the most exciting fixtures.
“They have players of great quality and we will prepare to face their best version, while trying to be the best version of ourselves too.”
Mbappé feeling pressure for France-Italy
France scored only one goal from open play at EURO 2024 and Mbappé disappointed too, although he wasn’t helped by fracturing his nose in the opening match.
There were reports he would require surgery during the summer, but his body seems to be healing itself.
“I had tests in Madrid and they said I don’t need an operation. I am trying to look forward, as the Euros are behind us now.”
Despite being one of the best players in the world, he has faced criticism for his performances in the France jersey and with Olivier Giroud’s retirement will also be taking on a new tactical role.
“I am at a point in my career where I try not to think too much about how other people see me. I play, try to give my best, adore this jersey. You cannot satisfy everyone in football.
“I play where I always wanted to play, so currently in my life I see only positives. I detest defeat and want to give my best for Real Madrid and France.
“There is nothing more important than the French national team. Curiously, we won the Nations League and there wasn’t much of a reaction, but when we lost it was treated like the end of the world. It’s a trophy and as such we always want to win.”
