Giovanni Martusciello confirmed he will be the Empoli Coach next season. “It’s a crazy move worthy of me and Empoli.”

The former player spent most of his career at the Stadio Castellani, making 91 appearances in all competition, including 50 in Serie A.

He has been assistant manager at Empoli since June 2010, working under Giuseppe Pillon, Guido Carboni, Alfredo Aglietti, Maurizio Sarri and Marco Giampaolo.

“It might be a risk for me to say I am up for this, but it’s a crazy move worthy of my and Empoli,” grinned the 44-year-old in Il Tirreno newspaper.

“During the season it felt like something had changed in me and when (President Fabrizio) Corsi asked me if I was ready, I accepted immediately.

“I am not even slightly frightened by this new responsibility. I will not change my approach. I am very happy today, as I will be the Coach of my team in the city that I love. It’s a dream come true.

“Why did the club choose me? They wanted to give a sense of consistency and carry on the work done by Sarri and Giampaolo.

“Knowing how ready this squad is to work pushed me on to accept without fear.”
