Inter director Beppe Marotta implied Tottenham Hotspur have been playing hardball over Christian Eriksen, but “we hope it can be finalised as soon as possible.”
The Danish international will be a free agent on June 30, so Inter had hoped to cut down the €20m asking price, considering they had already agreed personal terms with the player.
However, the latest reports suggest a deal will only be done for €20m – including bonuses – and a medical is set for Monday or Tuesday.
“We won’t hide, you all know we’ve been negotiating with Tottenham for some time. His contract is due to expire on June 30, so the only rights we are discussing are for those six months,” CEO Marotta told DAZN this morning.
“We are optimistic and hope the deal can be finalised as soon as possible, especially as the transfer window closes on Friday.”
He was asked if Eriksen’s arrival meant someone else would be leaving, for example Matias Vecino towards Everton?
“A good player is arriving, then the dynamics of the transfer window are still being evaluated in-house. We’ll always come to the conclusion made by the whole team and every element of the club.”
Ashley Young makes his debut today against Cagliari following the transfer from Manchester United, while Victor Moses is on the bench.
“The new arrivals are strong professionals, we must give them the right amount of time to settle.”
Marotta was also asked about Antonio Conte seeming to shrug off the transfer strategy in his press conference, complaining “it’s not as if we signed half of Real Madrid.” Was this critical of the club?
“Conte’s comments are realistic, normal and part of a regular communication protocol with a talented coach.”
