In an interview with the Corriere della Sera, the former Sampdoria striker looked back and considered his return.
“It had been over six years. And I didn't want to come back. I kept telling myself, you can only do worse than last time,” the 50-year-old mused.

“It had been over six years. And I didn't want to come back. I kept telling myself, you can only do worse than last time,” the 50-year-old mused.
“But in the end, the challenge of getting Inter back on their feet, and back to winning, was stimulating.
“One morning, after contact from [President Erick] Thohir, I was called by [former President Massimo] Moratti.
“I asked him, are you sure I should try again? He said: of course!
“I never had a cold relationship with Moratti. I left after winning, Moratti went on winning, and in the end we all had a good time.
“We called each other every Christmas. Inter have two Presidents, and [Moratti] calls me the way he did before. Only Paolo Mantovani used to love his players more than he does.
“I only saw Thohir once and I had a great impression from him. He's fast and he's practical. He's more like the owners of English clubs than the Italian ones. But he's very keen on what he's doing.
“In 2004 I was young, taking up the Inter bench wasn't easy. When you're 50, things are different. My experience abroad taught me a lot.”
