Eder only joined from Sampdoria yesterday, but many believe he’ll be in the starting XI tomorrow night.
“This is a great chance for him and for us. Eder can give us a big hand, but we mustn’t think that with him in the squad everything will suddenly change,” warned the Coach in a Press conference.
“When I said I could’ve scored some of the chances aged 50, it was just a joke, but people took it as something offensive. I said nothing wrong. We have an excellent rapport with the players and we say everything face to face.”
Inter have struggled of late, picking up just 11 points from the last eight Serie A rounds, plus the midweek 3-0 thrashing to Juventus in the Coppa Italia.
“January is an odd month for everyone because of the transfer market, while it can happen during a season to have a momentary wobble. It’s a long campaign, we were top of the table until January 6, so we can recover comfortably.
“There’s no crisis. We simply didn’t get the results we deserved. We lost some games in a strange way, as I’ve never experienced conceding two or three penalties on home turf in the final minute.
“Fortunately we are still near the top. Tomorrow is important, but not decisive. A win would help the team find more confidence and calm, but at the end of the day it’s still worth only three points. We know Milan are in better form right now, but the derby is open to any result.
“President Erick Thohir is not like us Italians, who losing one game doesn’t sleep and tries to tear everything up. He knows there is a path and we need time, we are happy with what we’ve done so far. We are Inter and must aim for the top.”
Mancini’s old friend and assistant manager Sinisa Mihajlovic, now Coach of Milan, joked Panini needed to release extra pages for their sticker album as Inter had bought so many new players.
“Sinisa’s making too many jokes lately! We got Eder because Fredy Guarin left, then reduced the squad by releasing Andrea Ranocchia, Dodo and Martin Montoya. Nemanja Vidic left. We have fewer players than the start of the season, really.
“Why did we sign Eder rather than a midfielder? Because we had this little problem of struggling to score goals and needed another option. Eder can play in any role, as centre-forward, support striker or wide in a 4-3-3.
“Will Eder start tomorrow? I don’t know, he was a little tired yesterday after all the journeys to complete the transfer. We’ll evaluate his condition today and tomorrow.”
The spending spree isn’t over, as Mancini was asked about Ever Banega.
“He is a Sevilla player. He’s talented, has good technique, strong character and will be a free agent at the end of the season. I like him.”
