Lyanco: ‘Feared I’d never play again’

Torino defender Lyanco admits he was “afraid I’d never be able to play football again” after eight months without training.

Still only 21, the Brazilian joined from Sao Paulo a year ago for €7m plus bonuses, but made only six appearances for the club between Serie A and Coppa Italia.

The most recent match was in December 2017, a first he sprained his ankle, then a foot injury dragged on to the point where he needed surgery.

“I am happy to be back, as for the last eight months I wasn’t able to train, let alone play,” he told Torino Channel after his first training session today.

“I’d never experienced such a long period off the field before. It was difficult and I was even afraid I’d never be able to play football again.

“I had my family by my side, they supported and calmed me. It was so important to have them with me, because I was really scared.

“Now I think that I’m finally back home. It was great seeing my teammates and talking to the staff.”
