The president is at a new low in terms of popularity. The sensational drama surrounding the failure to sign Coach Marcelo Bielsa was followed by bitter protests carried out by the fans, which are still ongoing.

Today the club presented a new director of communications, Arturo Diaconale, who should help allay the tension.

“We are restructuring the club so we can improve the people working in certain roles,” Lotito told the Press. “They must be more professional. Arturo Diaconale is an old-time friend, since 1988. He's the proof that I'm looking for moral values.

“This club had nothing when I arrived. They didn't have a radio, a TV or a newspaper, they had no coach to carry the squad and no shops around Rome, which now are being presented as a bad thing.

“We did so many things and nobody noticed them, only the negative things get highlighted. It means something isn't working in terms of communication.

“I want to start a new season, with an authoritative mediator who can get rid of the toxicity in our environment and allow for merit to be recognised. Then, if things aren't done properly, criticism will be fair.

“Our purpose is to re-establish normality. I wrote an editorial in which I said that results can only be obtained thanks to all the components. That's to say the club, the footballers, the technical staff and the fans.

“When some of these sectors demand a privileged position, a crisis ensues that damages the pride of a club like Lazio. If we don't transmit certain values, then we lose our characteristics.

“I say, let's start again, all together! We must give value to what we are, or we risk losing everything that we built in more than 100 years of history.

“We must be proud of ourselves. Nobody can take away from us what we have, while in the past we let that happen.

“The interest of the club is the supreme interest, it comes before mine, before that of the team, the footballers and the fans. If there is no club, the other components don't exist either.

“We made some superhuman efforts to save our identity, while other clubs were born out of bankruptcy. We are still the ones that were born in 1900. These innovations are necessary for the development of the club.”
