Speculation had been rife that the 39-year-old was set to lose his job following Sunday’s home defeat to Livorno and a string of poor recent results.
Club President Massimo Cellino seemed to have all but decided to fire Lopez but now seems to have had second thoughts.
This unexpected stay of execution for the Uruguayan by no means guarantees his long term future at the Sardinian side, and it is thought that another poor performance and result at San Siro could finally cost him his job.
Lopez, who also played for the club, currently has Cagliari 16th in the Serie A table.
