Genoa Coach Fabio Liverani admits he “could not have asked for better” than his Serie A debut against Inter at San Siro.

The 37-year-old only retired in 2011 and was in charge of the Genoa Primavera youth team, but propelled into the big time by President Enrico Preziosi.

He’ll make his debut at 17.00 UK time on Sunday in Inter-Genoa. Click here for a match preview.

“I could not have asked for a better start than to debut at San Siro,” said Liverani in his Press conference.

“This represents an important test for us so that we can evaluate our reaction after the Coppa Italia elimination.”

Liverani has some problems to contend with in midfield, as Francelino Matuzalem is not 100 per cent fit with Davide Biondini suspended. Alberto Gilardino should lead the attack and Alessandro Gamberini make his debut after arriving on loan from Napoli.

“I still have some doubts over the line-up. I asked the lads to highlight the defects of our opponents while simultaneously disguising our own.

“Inter are a new collective, just like us, but have players capable of deciding a game by themselves. They are the favourites, but the pitch will do the talking.

“Walter Mazzarri deserves compliments, as he has been doing well for quite a while.”
