Roma have the chance to close on Inter in fourth place, but face Vincenzo Montella’s Sampdoria.

This has been a positive weekend for the Giallorossi already, because Inter, Fiorentina and Milan were all held to draws.

A victory would put them within a point of fourth-placed Inter and two adrift of the Viola in third, so Champions League hopes are very much alive.

This has been a positive weekend for the Giallorossi already, because Inter, Fiorentina and Milan were all held to draws.

A victory would put them within a point of fourth-placed Inter and two adrift of the Viola in third, so Champions League hopes are very much alive.

They’ve won two on the bounce under Luciano Spalletti and benefited immensely from the January transfer window, bringing in Stephan El Shaarawy, Diego Perotti and Ervin Zukanovic (who joined from today’s opponents Sampdoria).

Edin Dzeko has shaken off his injury, but is on the bench, as Perotti leads with support from El Shaarawy, Mohamed Salah and Alessandro Florenzi.

Daniele De Rossi, Vasilis Torosidis, Norbert Gyomber and suspended Radja Nainggolan miss out.

Sampdoria have several familiar faces, as Montella was a Roma player and Coach, plus Spalletti’s team-mate in the old days at Empoli.

Antonio Cassano also takes on his old club, but FantAntonio is initially benched in favour of Luis Muriel and Joaquin Correa.

Dodo is another ex-Roma man and Andrea Ranocchia will be hoping for an improvement after two howlers in his first two games for the Blucerchiati.

Jacopo Sala, Lorenzo De Silvestri, Carlos Carbonero and suspended Modibo Diakite’ miss out.

Samp are something of a taboo team for Roma, as they’ve beaten the Giallorossi in both of their last two meetings, home and away, and are unbeaten in three encounters.

The last time Roma beat the Blucerchiati was 3-0 at the Olimpico in February 2014.

Fans will not happily recall the 2-1 Sampdoria victory here on April 25 2010, as that result essentially ended Roma’s Scudetto hopes.

The Genoa side also had a 4-1 win at the Olimpico in September 1996, when Montella scored twice for Sampdoria.
