Leicester manager Rodgers: ‘What is the Conference League?’

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers admits he doesn’t ‘even know’ what the Conference League is after Napoli knocked his team out of the Europa League.

Both sides were decimated by injuries on one side and COVID cases on the other, but while the Partenopei fumbled a 2-0 lead, they did win 3-2 through Adam Ounas and an Eljif Elmas brace.

Europa League | Napoli 3-2 Leicester City: Elmas seals thriller

Spartak Moscow won 1-0 away to Legia Warsaw, who missed a stoppage-time penalty, so Napoli go through second and Leicester are knocked down to the Conference League.

“I’ve got to be honest I don’t even know what the competition is. I was focused on the Europa League and winning this group and at the very least finishing second. But I am sure we will find out soon enough,” Rodgers told BT Sport.

“There is a lot of naivety in our team, with a lot of young players and it has been a big demand for them this season.

“We have played a number of systems but individually it comes down to having that mentality to track a runner or stop a cross. We were good offensively but it was nowhere near good enough.

“We should have gone in front and with the first attack in the box they score. We have to do more to block the shot, be more aggressive and you have to throw your body in the way to stop the shot.

“The second goal we jumped at the wrong times and the third goal you have to track the runner and stop the cross. The third goal was a cheap goal to give away. These are the basics of the game we are not doing so well.”
