The Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into Lazio and a possibly violation of the health protocol in place during the coronavirus pandemic.

The cases reportedly involve Ciro Immobile, Lucas Leiva and Thomas Strakosha, who were stopped from travelling to Russia by the UEFA, and were unavailable for the match in Bruges last week too. But negative swab tests had allowed the three to play in the 4-3 win over Torino in Serie A, when Immobile scored a decisive goal towards the end.

"Unlike the majority of laboratories we analyze three genes and not only the two classical genes,” Massimiliano Taccone told Ilciriaco.it.

“Among these three, there is a coronavirus gene that is not specific to Covid-19.

“With our lab, we reported the positive gene, but this is not a gene that infects. We have specified the positivity of this gene. The availability of a footballer does not depend on us but on the medical staff of the club.

“Certainly, Lazio are not clueless, they know what they are doing".

"I would never dare to question the work of UEFA laboratories,” Taccone told Ansa later.

“It is not the first time that the results do not coincide. Anyway, I would like to point out that we are talking about a disagreement on two of the 122 swabs we performed on Monday on the Lazio group.

“Even before the Champions League match against Borussia on October 20 there was a case of presumed positivity which was negative for us.

We think the same thing may have happened for these two players who are negative for us and positive for them.

On such large numbers it can happen. For what we know Lazio have respected the protocols to the letter".

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Biancocelesti risk anything between fines to exclusion from the championship.
