Inter will reportedly accelerate Mateo Kovacic’s new contract talks, as Real Madrid are showing interest.

The Croatian has been one of Inter’s star performers this season, with two goals and an assist in his 12 Serie A appearances so far.

The former Dinamo Zagreb playmaker has a contract until 2017, but the Nerazzurri have been seeking to extend the 20-year-old’s deal until 2019.

That process could now be accelerated as the Corriere dello Sport reports that Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid have shown interest in the young midfielder.

The newspaper states that Los Merengues have followed Kovacic’s development closely, and have been impressed with his displays in an Inter shirt so far this term.

The sports daily believes that this interest will lead to Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio accelerating contract talks, with a meeting with Kovacic and his representatives expected this week.

The intention would be to tie the player to a new deal before the end of 2014, thereby giving Inter a far stronger hand in the event of any possible bid from Real Madrid or another European heavyweight.

Corriere dello Sport reports that a fee of at least €35m would be required for Inter to part with the Croatian.
