Kazakhstan: ‘We want Gattuso’

Gennaro Gattuso could be the next national Coach of Kazakhstan after his touchline ban for Pisa, confirmed a source.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper, Gattuso received an offer to take over the Kazakhstan bench.

“In our country the level of the national team is not very high, or rather it’s not up to the standard we’d like, while at club level we are improving, so we need a targeted intervention,” said an anonymous source from the Kazakh FA.

“In our country the level of the national team is not very high, or rather it’s not up to the standard we’d like, while at club level we are improving, so we need a targeted intervention,” said an anonymous source from the Kazakh FA.

“Considering his character and his history, Gattuso is suited to our aims. He is a man who loves challenges, he’s a fighter and we need a Coach eager to work who wants to be a leader.

“He’ll be with us for a long time and experience our situation fully, getting to know the clubs and the grassroots of our football. We were very happy to talk to him.”

The former Milan and Italy midfielder has had a chequered management career, enjoying very brief spells at FC Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and now Pisa.

This week he was given a three-game touchline ban in Lega Pro for “repeatedly directing offensive language” towards the referee.

Kazakhstan only received their FIFA recognition in 2002, having broken away from the old USSR in 1991.

They are in a 2018 World Cup qualifying group with Romania, Denmark, Montenegro, Armenia and Poland.

“Gattuso must first finish the season with Pisa, as he is a fair man. We’ll sort out the deal at the end of the season and we are sure there will be satisfaction from both parties.”

This week Gattuso did seem to hint he’d be walking away from Pisa, even if they earn promotion from Lega Pro into Serie B.

“The project has changed since I arrived. People came in with different ideas to mine, focused on a youth project similar to a Football College.

“There is no longer the family atmosphere of when I arrived and Fabrizio Lucchesi was the sole owner.”

In January Terravision bought half the shares of the club.
