Italy preparing EURO 2028 hosting bid

UEFA have published the procedure to apply for hosting duties of the 2028 European Championship and Italy are expected to propose their candidacy.

EURO 2024 will be staged in Germany, their second major tournament in recent years after the 2006 World Cup.

Today the requirements for the EURO 2028 bidding process were confirmed, with the decision to be made in September 2023.

This in itself could cause some tension, seeing as FIFA are trying to push through the proposal of a World Cup every two years, which would clash with this competition.

There will be 51 matches involving 24 teams and any nation – or nations in the case of a joint bid – must have 10 stadiums.

That includes a minimum of one stadium with at least 60,000 capacity, preferably two stadiums with 50,000 capacity, four stadiums with at least 40,000 capacity and three stadiums with at least 30,000 capacity.

The deadline for national associations to confirm their interest to bid is March 23, 2022.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina confirmed in July that Italy are evaluating bids to host the 2028 European Championship or even the 2030 World Cup.
