Former Italy defender Claudio Gentile warns Luciano Spalleti that it’s’ time for some changes’ but he is not too worried about England, the potential Azzurri opponents in the EURO 2024 quarter-finals.
Gentile, a 1982 World Cup winner, was among the Italian legends interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday while the Azzurri are preparing to meet Switzerland in the EURO 2024 Round of 16 on Saturday.
“This Swiss side is tough and it will be difficult to beat them,” he said.
“They are strong physically and tactically evolved. They have a key player, Ndoye, who can hurt us, and a midfield partnership, Freuler and Xhaka, that dictates the tempo.
One favourite emerges to replace Calafiori as Spalletti ponders more Italy changes vs. Switzerland
“However, we have superior potential, although still vastly unexpressed. We must play more, leave less space for the rivals, and keep a higher line.
“I think it’s time for some changes, like starting Fagioli,” continued the ex-Juventus star.
“I don’t know if we’ll meet England if we qualify, but I would not be too worried about it in that case. They’ve been disappointing so far. It’s nothing compared to Spain, who enhance their youths and are beautiful to see.”
