“I am torn, because we’ve been coming off a good run of victories, but there are also the unpredictable events in football, such as losing Luiz Felipe and Luis Alberto,” said the coach in his press conference.
“We have to look forward and focus on a fearsome opponent like Sassuolo. The Neroverdi have always made our lives difficult, they have quality, play wonderful football and we need to counter them with the determination and aggression we saw in recent performances.”
Luis Alberto was rushed to hospital to have his appendix removed this week, while defender Luiz Felipe had ankle surgery and is likely to be out for at least two months.
This is pushing Lazio back onto the transfer market for a centre-back, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos reportedly on his way from Arsenal.
“We are discussing it with the club, we know that Luiz Felipe left a big hole in the defence, but we must try to get something done for coverage in the meantime. I have to focus on what’s happening now and we are confident that we can do well anyway.
“We reach the halfway stage of the season, and amid a thousand difficulties and obstacles, we have still done very well in Europe and the Coppa Italia, while we’ve dropped a few points in Serie A.
“Luis Alberto is unique in his way of reading the game and our system, but we are accustomed by now to missing key players, so we’ll have a great game regardless.”
