The pressure is growing on the Aquile after they fought back from 3-0 down to scrape a 3-3 draw with Atalanta, but went back to their usual routine by fumbling a lead to lose 2-1 at Celtic on Thursday.

“We had one of our best performances of the season in Glasgow, but didn’t get the result,” said the coach in his press conference.

“We must keep believing in what we are doing. Not everyone can play with that confidence at Celtic Park and we deserved far more from the game.

“I maintain we must work to ensure we don’t repeat that result for such a strong performance. I remain convinced that results come from performances, but we made individual errors against Celtic.”

There are reports Inzaghi could even be fired to make way for Gennaro Gattuso if the results don’t improve soon, so he was asked if this result could prove decisive.

“It’ll certainly be important, as Fiorentina are one of our direct competitors for position. We are both on the same number of points and going through a good period of form. The entire city of Florence will be cheering on their team, but we must read the game well and pick our moments.

“I’ll show my players the Celtic game and they’ll realise it was a good performance, intelligent, with some very promising attacking situations. Celtic lose very few home matches and have quality, on top of their traditional determination. The truth is, we allowed them very little and regret not killing the game off earlier.

“We once again lacked that clinical edge and wasted some incredible chances with Marco Parolo, Ciro Immobile, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and when Tucu Correa hit the upright.”

Lazio have shown weaknesses at the back too, so are up against on form Fiorentina duo Federico Chiesa and Franck Ribery.

“Vincenzo Montella is constructing his team and I think it’s reductive to only talk about those two players. We must give 120 per cent, without leaving gaps, and remain a team throughout.”
