Investigation into Parma promotion

There are reports an investigation is underway into the Serie B game against Spezia that saw Parma secure promotion.

Sportitalia and the Corriere dello Sport claim the FIGC has been looking into the match and have seen enough evidence to pursue the matter further.

Parma won 2-0 away to Spezia with two goals from Amato Ciciretti.

When it was still at 1-0, Spezia were awarded a penalty, which ex-Parma striker Alberto Gilardino blasted over the bar.

The victory enabled Parma’s historic third consecutive promotion after going bankrupt and starting again from Serie D in 2015.

However, it would not have been enough without Frosinone fumbling a lead to draw 2-2 with Foggia in a simultaneous match.

In that game, Foggia had earlier scored a remarkable own goal with Matteo Rubin.

La Gazzetta dello Sport maintain the FIGC prosecutor has already interrogated two Spezia players, Filippo De Col and Alberto Masi, Parma’s Fabio Ceravolo and Emanuele Calaiò, team manager Leonar Pinto and CEO Micheli.

It’s alleged Ceravolo and Calaiò sent text messages to De Col and Masi four days before the game, joking about Spezia defending and noting the two teams had very different motivation going into the final round.
