Inter star Calhanoglu has respiratory tract infection

Inter are eager to find out more information after the Turkey Football Federation announced Hakan Calhanoglu is suffering from a respiratory tract infection.

The midfielder is on international duty and was expected to feature in the upcoming friendly with Germany and the EURO 2024 qualifier in Wales.

It was known that Calhanoglu did not take part in today’s training session under Italian coach Vincenzo Montella, though initial reports suggested nothing more serious than flu symptoms.

The formal statement on the Turkish Football Federation site instead refers to an ‘upper respiratory tract infection’ and that would seem more serious.

It remains to be seen if he will remain in Turkey for treatment or be sent back to the Inter camp.

Turkey have already qualified for the 2024 European Championship, so do not need one of their star players to step up in these two games.

The 29-year-old has been crucial for Inter so far this season, contributing six goals and an assist in 15 competitive matches.
