Ciro Immobile thanked Cesare Prandelli for his senior Italy debut against Spain. “We had good scoring opportunities.”

The Torino striker was a mainstay with the Under-21 side and after 13 Serie A goals this season has been promoted.

“I had an important chance and thought the ball was a bit higher, but it dipped before reaching me,” he told Rai Sport.

“I want to thank the Coach for this chance against the World champions and I’m happy with my performance.

“Spain make it difficult for you physically and psychologically, as they keep this possession for such long periods. We had some very good scoring opportunities and had a good game.

“I will keep trying to do well with my club and that is the only way to get into the Italy squad.”

His fellow former Under-21 stars Marco Verratti and Lorenzo Insigne were left on the bench in Madrid.

“I don’t get involved in these matters, the Coach makes his decisions. Of course I am happy to see Lorenzo and Marco again, as we made history together with Pescara as well as the Italy Under-21 side.”

They had also faced Spain in the European Under-21 Championship Final last June, a team that included Thiago Alcantara.

“Spain always try to keep the initiative and they did the same against us in that Final. It was a little different tonight, as we started well with Alessio Cerci and Daniel Osvaldo, then they began to push us back.”
