Lazio stars Ciro Immobile and Francesco Acerbi publicly thanked departing coach Simone Inzaghi, after the club refused to say his name.
In their statement confirming Inzaghi had decided not to extend his contract, the Aquile never even mentioned him by name, showing the irritation they felt at his switch to Inter.
The players were not so reticent and sent effusive praise towards the tactician via social media.
“Five years spent together always battling side by side for the good of this jersey,” wrote Immobile.
“We went through so many moments of joy, pain, victory and defeat. You helped me settle in off the field in what had become your city and now to a degree is also mine.
“Thank you for everything you taught me, there were difficult moments, but you were always by my side and I will forever be grateful for that.
“I wish you all the best, because you deserve it.”
Defender Acerbi also saluted Inzaghi, who does not have a social media profile.
“Thank you Mister for these three years together, you really wanted me here, making me feel important and trusted,” wrote the former Sassuolo man.
“This helped me to grow professional, and I can say you were fundamental in that process. I always tried to give my best to repay you.
“I wish you all the best and a career packed with joy and satisfaction. We’ll meet again on the pitch, battling away as we are accustomed to doing.”
