Former Inter defender Marco Materazzi claims “Mauro Icardi or a defender” will decide Sunday’s Milan derby.
Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport on Wednesday, Materazzi also gave Inter boss Luciano Spalletti some advice over how to approach the inter-city clash.
“What must Inter do to win the derby? Do what Gattuso is doing, playing with heart, passion and competence, things that Inter have shown they have and can’t have lost,” he explained.

“It’s also for this reason that if I were Spalletti, I’d show the lads the video of when Inter beat Chievo 5-0, so everyone would remember how generous, confident and bold they were then. We must play with ‘grinta’ and compactness.
“Playing team? It’s impossible to win a derby if you don’t. And given the situation with the fans, the fact that Milan are the designated home team can be an advantage.
“There will also be the best interisti in the stands, those who support the team for 90 minutes and only whistle once the game is over.
“Who will decide the derby? Icardi or a defender. It’s true that Milan’s defence has grown a lot compared to the first game, but Mauro is Mauro.
“The area of the pitch that I think the game will be addressed is on the wings.”
