Simone Inzaghi has criticised Romelu Lukaku’s recent spate of missed opportunities in front of goal for Inter, although remains adamant that he has been satisfied with his team’s overall performances in recent weeks.
Lukaku failed to convert a seemingly unmissable chance from three yards out during the Nerazzuri’s 1-1 draw with Salernitana in Serie A on Friday evening.
‘Big Rom’ also missed a glorious opportunity to put Inter 1-0 up against Fiorentina the weekend previously, before Giacomo Bonaventuura put La Viola ahead moments later.
When asked about the most recent of Lukaku’s misses against Salernitana, Inzaghi was the first person to remind the media that it was not the only sitter Lukaku had missed in recent weeks.
During his press conference ahead of the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Benfica, Inzaghi said: “I spoke about the head. I wouldn’t just stop with Salernitana either, I would also think about the chance against Fiorentina.
“Those games gave us two results that weren’t what we had envisaged. Those who write and those who talk a lot are influenced by the results, but you have to be clear-headed.
“It’s difficult in football to put things to one side, but in the last few games, as shown by the team, I’m happy. Clearly I’m disappointed with the result.
Inzaghi also provided an honest assessment of his team’s failure to convert goalscoring opportunities in Salerno, adding that: “Last year we won 5-0 and maybe we didn’t play as well as that on Friday.
“In the first half alone we had four shots on goal and scored three, this time we had more than twenty and scored one. We know where we were wrong, there are always criticisms.”
