Gosens: ‘Thank you Atalanta, but Inter a possibility that comes only once’

Robin Gosens has chosen the Number 18 jersey at Inter and sent a sweet farewell message to Atalanta before explaining why he made the move to ‘continue the tradition of German success’ at San Siro.

The wing-back completed his transfer today on loan with obligation to buy for a reported €25m plus bonuses.

It’s a huge profit for Atalanta, who had signed him from Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2017 for just over €1m.

“Over four years have passed since I arrived at Atalanta as an unknown youngster,” wrote Gosens on Instagram.

“This club gave me the opportunity to play in Serie A and the confidence to grow as a player and above all as a man. From the first minute, I gave my all for this jersey and Bergamo will always be a special city for me and my family. I had incredible experiences here, found friends for life and my son was born here too!

“So thank you to the fans who supported me always, thank you to the teammates who helped me grow in every training session, thank you to the staff who put faith in me and thank you to the club who gave me the opportunity to play in a great league.

“However, in football there are possibilities that come along only once and this is why I am very happy to sign for Inter!

“I hope you appreciated my work and my effort. Ciao, Robin.”

After that, Gosens sat down with Inter TV to record a video interview and explain his feelings at this remarkable new experience.

“I am so proud, as I have arrived at one of the biggest clubs in Europe and can’t wait to get started. I spoke to the coach last night on a videocall, he explained what he expects from me and I told him some of my ideas, we really want to work together.”

He becomes the ninth German international to wear the Inter jersey, following in the footsteps of legends such as Andreas Brehme, Lothar Matthaus and Jurgen Klinsmann.

“German champions have written the history of this club and I hope to continue writing that history. I came here with great ambition and want to continue that tradition of Germans doing well at Inter.”

Newcastle United had also made an offer, but Gosens assured he “did not need to be convinced” to accept Inter and reunite with his former Atalanta teammate Alessandro Bastoni.
