Mario Gomez recognised the importance of his goal for Fiorentina, not only for their tie with Juventus, but also for his own progression.
The German netted for the first time yesterday evening since returning from five months out with a knee injury, to earn his side an away goal draw in Turin in the first leg of the Europa League Last 16.
“This is an important goal. I’m happy for the team and for the draw,” Gomez has told reporters post-match.
“It is not easy to play here in Turin, against a strong team. It is not easy to get back in shape after five months away, but the condition is slowly coming back.
“I always said that when I get back into shape, the goals would also be there, as they always have been.
“Even in the last few games I have felt my strength returning. I’m happy for the goal but also to have recovered.”
