Giovinco hasn’t played in Italy since leaving Juventus nearly five years ago.
In the summer of 2015 he joined Toronto FC and stayed for three years, before joining current side Al Hilal in 2019.
Giovinco spoke to website Cronachedispogliatoio. It about his career.
The former Parma player’s greatest spell of his career arguably came with his time in the MLS, so how does he remember it?
“It was four great years because in a player the age between 27 and 33 is the peak of their careers,” Giovinco told the website.
“The MLS is a style of football that highlights my qualities. There are a lot of open spaces, it was perfect.”
Giovinco says at the beginning of his career he found it difficult at Juve.
“One of the problems I had in the early years of my career was at Juve, where it was important to win. I’ve always wanted to question myself trying to understand what my level was, where I could go.
“In Italy we look more at the tactical aspect than highlighting the qualities of a player.”
Giovinco then stated who he believed were the best players he played alongside with.
“Needless to say, Paul Pogba, Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo.
“A player similar to me, and I also personality-wise, is Carlos Tevez. He impressed me most of all.
Giovinco was then asked to name a player who could’ve done much more.
“Kingsley Coman. I trained with him for six months and he was lightning. Impressive. Unfortunately he is very unfortunate on a physical level.”
The Atomic Ant played for Juve on and off for five years, so how would he describe the mentality of the club?
“There is the intensity and the desire to win everything, every match. They train like there is no tomorrow. Now I have become like this.”
Giovinco hasn’t played in Serie A for over five years, and hasn’t played with the national side since October 2015.
“The desire is there. I want to close the circle in Italy, but right now I’m happy here. I’ve already won something in Saudi Arabia and I’m happy.
“The only way I have to get back into the national side is to return to Italy, and doing something really great there would allow me to get back into contention for the national side.
“It has found a good identity with Roberto Mancini, and they are a good team to watch.”
