The Marassi outfit are openly looking for a new centre-forward in January and Gila, who they targeted in the summer, is again viewed as a possible option.

Rumours of a switch only gathered pace this week after the striker was benched for Fiorentina’s game at Siena.

“Being a substitute doesn’t mean anything,” Beppe Bozzo told TMW. “It may be surprising to see an attacker such as him not in the starting XI, but it doesn’t mean that he will be sold.

“Gilardino will stay at Fiorentina until the end of his contract which expires in June 2013. There are no options for a sale.

“I haven’t spoken with any other clubs about him,” the agent continued. “He has an important salary, he’s an important player.

“He’s also working well under new boss Delio Rossi, a tactician who I am sure will get the very best out of him.”

The 2006 World Cup winner, now 29, has scored just two goals in 12 Serie A appearances for the Viola this term.
