Gervinho says ‘I couldn’t continue at Roma’ as ‘getting good results would’ve been like betraying Rudi Garcia’.

The winger departed Rome for a lucrative move to Chinese club Hebei China Fortune in January, shortly after Spalletti replaced Garcia on the Lupi bench.

“I didn’t have any more objectives,” the Ivorian told L’Equipe.

“I had to start again in another league, another continent, to start a new life. I’d already tried Ligue 1, I was already at a club like Arsenal, who I love, in England, at the highest moment. And then at Roma, with Rudi.

“It was thanks to Rudi that I signed for Roma because initially the club didn’t want me. When Spalletti arrived as the new Coach, I spoke with him.

“Many players, like De Rossi, told me he was a good guy. But when Garcia was sacked I couldn’t continue, I didn’t have the right motivation.

“Obtaining good results with Spalletti would’ve been like betraying Rudi. I saw it as impossible.

“I also wasn't in top shape because of various injuries. The best solution was to leave. In the end we all benefited, both me and Roma.”
