Gattuso: ‘I want to manage Rangers’

World Cup winner Gennaro Gattuso admits that he’d love to manage former club Rangers one day.

Gattuso played for the Glasgow giants in 1997-98, but the club has endured a torrid time in recent years.

The Gers were liquidated in 2012, with a new club being formed and granted admission to the bottom tier of Scottish football, and have worked their way up to the Championship.

Manager Ally McCoist has been placed on gardening leave after tendering his resignation, with replacement Kenny McDowall also resigning last week, so there is likely to be a vacancy at Ibrox in the near future, unless the latter works through his notice period.

"My dream is to maybe one day to have the chance to work for this club," Gattuso told the BBC after playing in a benefit game for former Rangers star Fernando Ricksen, who is battling Motor Neurone Disease.

"I played today, but manager is a different job. I am sure 100 per cent that this is a big club.

“When I see Rangers with 10-20,000 supporters, it is no good for the team and I hope many more come to the stadium [Ibrox holds over 50,000].

“It is a big memory to start here as a teenager. It is a fantastic day because I like this stadium, I like these people, these supporters.

"The club at this moment is not in a good condition, but I want the best for this club.”

Former Milan midfielder Gattuso is currently unemployed after leaving Greek side OFI Crete.
