Potential replacements include Leonardo Jardim of Monaco, Lazio’s Simone Inzaghi – following in the footsteps of older brother Pippo – and Sampdoria boss Giampaolo.
The latter name provides an interesting scenario, as Gattuso has been linked with the Samp job should Giampaolo move on, so they could effectively swap clubs.
Another contender for Gattuso’s signature is Fiorentina, as La Gazzetta dello Sport posit that new club owner Rocco Commisso – who is set to purchase the Viola from the Della Valle brothers – will also hire Massimiliano Mirabelli as director of sport.
It was Mirabelli who chose Gattuso for Milan in November 2017 and backed him all the way, even after reported pressure from the then-owners in China.
Curiously, Gattuso replaced Vincenzo Montella at Milan and he could do the same at Fiorentina, as L’Aeroplanino barely managed to keep them afloat with two draws and six competitive defeats since taking over in April.
There is a special link between Commisso, Mirabelli and Gattuso, as all three hail originally from the Calabria region and are very proud of those roots from one of the poorest areas of Italy.
Commisso emigrated to America as a child and went on to become a self-made billionaire.
